xD Picture Card

xD Picture Card Usage

The xD-Picture Card is a type of flash memory card, used mainly in digital cameras. xD stands for extreme Digital. These cards were introduced in July 2002 and developed by Olympus and Fujifilm. You can transfer Pictures from the xD card to computer by plugging the camera into the PC or removing the card and inserting it into a card reader. In both these cases, the computer sees the card as a mass storage device with photos on it.

xD cards are fast & have a small form-factor compared to older formats such as SmartMedia Card, MultiMedia Card, and MemoryStick. They have a low power consumption and are very small in size.

xD cards consist of a controller-less NAND flash memory chip embedded in plastic and can be used by hobbyists as a common source of NAND flash memory chips for custom projects.
